Kao Yai is the highest point of Koh Samui Island in Thailand. Apart from offering a spectacular panoramic view of the beautiful island and all its wondrous splendour, this spot is also famous for what is known as the ‘Secret Buddha Garden’ or the ‘Magic Garden’.
The garden was built by Khun Nim Thongsuk, a farmer famous for the creation of this enchanting garden as well as for placing the island of Koh Samui on the map in terms of the durian fruit (A pungent yet tasty delicacy much sought after and popular in South East Asia). Having dedicated his life to farming and cultivation Thongsuk wished to bequeath something beautiful that would enhance the garden in which he worked for so many years. Thus at the age of 77 he began work on a garden that is made even more enchanting by its very haphazardness.
Many sculptures and stone images are laid along the way in unexpected corners too, and these depict Buddhist and Thai cultural stories, folklore and legends. Finding the garden itself is an adventure as the road leading up to it is through the jungle. A four wheel drive is essential in order to get there in one piece!
Whilst all the sculptures found at the site are exquisite in their craftsmanship, including the one of the garden owner, the masterpiece is no doubt the amphitheatre like area depicting angels, musicians and dancers. Behind this lies the tomb in which Thongsuk and his wife were laid to rest. The spot is a beautiful one as it offers an excellent view of most of the garden creations. If driving by yourself does not appeal to you, especially given the rather difficult drive to the site, then safari tours are available that head to the area and let you explore this wonderful attraction.
If you hope to visit the island and are looking for a Koh Samui resort and more specifically a Chaweng hotel then you would do well to consider Anantara Lawana Resort & Spa Koh Samui. With its spectacular views, unparalleled service and hospitality, luxurious amenities and friendly staff, it is one of the best accommodation options on the island.
