Located in the northwest region of Phuket Island, Mai Khao is one of Thailand’s most stunning beaches. With a coastline lasting over 10 km long off the Andaman Sea, it is the lengthiest beach on the island. Another highlight is that the beachfront faces the Phuket International Airport!
How to get there
Mai Khao is situated towards the far northwestern extremity of Ko Phuket, Thailand off the Andaman Coast, adjoining the Phuket International Airport. It takes at least 45 minutes to get to the beach from Phuket Town or Patong Beach.
Surroundings
Mai Khao Beach lies within the border of Sirinat National Park. The northernmost section of the beach is sometimes called Hat Sai Kaew and has plenty of green foliage, while its southern end is closer to the airport. However, the beach is located at a considerable distance from all major roads, thus limiting traffic and other noise. A hotel near Phuket Airport, like the Avani+ Mai Khao Phuket Suites & Villas, can be a good location to base your stay to explore the region.
Plane spotting
It goes without saying that watching the planes is a popular pastime for those who visit the beach. Airplane Viewpoint is located southward across a small lagoon which reaches the sea during high tide. This site is broad and slopes directly towards a tall chain link fence where most planes land and depart.
Best spot for photos
Find a spot closer to the runway to see the departing and incoming planes for the best views. The whole experience can be trance-like if you select the right time and place to observe the aeroplanes – and many dramatic photo opportunities await photo enthusiasts!
