The splendid Man Mo Temple located within the territory of Hong Kong is one of the most ancient and best known shrines in the area. It was originally constructed as far back as 1848 during the period of British administration. Although the complex has been refurbished several times most of the early structures remain intact.
Interestingly numerous Man Mo temples may be found across the vast extent of China. These shrines are dedicated to two very dissimilar gods who are equally revered. Of these Man Cheong is revered as the God of Literature whilst Mo is a synonym for the God of War, Kwan Yu.
Within the temple you will see statues of the two deities. Man is attired in a green mantle, and holds a writing instrument in one hand. On the other hand Kwan Yu is attired in red, and brandishes a large sword. Additionally you will see figures of other deities scattered throughout the place of worship.
Even today many devotees regularly frequent the Man Mo Temple. Believers burn massive rolls of incense which are suspended from the ceiling of the temple building. This is thought to attract the notice of the deities in the heavens, whilst others believe that the incense sustains and nourishes the spirits of ancestors who have passed away.
The visitor will also notice intricately fashioned sedan chairs which date to the period of the 19th century. These were formerly employed to carry the venerated statues of deities through the lanes of the city.
Visitors should also take the opportunity to have their fortunes divulged at the numerous stalls of fortune tellers situated in the environs of the place of worship. Both local residents as well as visitors from overseas can be seen consulting the fortune tellers.
The splendid temple complex features magnificent Chinese architectural elements, and is adorned with granite engravings, ceramic statuettes, wood etchings, plaster murals and mouldings. These features demonstrate the meticulous and sophisticated craftsmanship of the local artisans.
