The largest city in the U.S state of Minnesota, Minneapolis has a progressive prosperity and is at times referred to as the Min-Apple, outshined only by the Big Apple, New York City. Abundantly rich in water with a myriad of wetlands and lakes, the city was once the flour milling capital in the world.
Located on the historic Mississippi Riverfront in Minneapolis, United States, the Mill City Museum is dedicated to the historical society of Minnesota. Built into the ruins of a structure which was once the largest flour mill in the world, the museum presents an informative insight into the intertwined histories of the river, the city of Minneapolis and of course the flour industry.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the mill complex dates from the 1870’s. Located within the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area of the National Park Service, the complex is part of the St. Anthony’s Falls Historic District.
Among the many exhibits at the museum are some pieces depicting the city’s history, a baking lab and a water lab and flour milling machinery. Visitors to the museum can conveniently navigate as a multi-story flour tower which is the centerpiece of the exhibit, serves as a freight elevator carrying them to different floors of the building. The design of each floor resembles a working flour mill and at the 8th floor where the exit is located, the staff interprets extant equipment. The ninth floor of the museum complex is a must-visit for the visitor as it is where the observation deck is located affording picturesque views of the St. Anthony’s Falls.
The building also features some creative work of local artists such as Maakestad, Joann Verburg, Kathleen Richert and Kim Lawler.
In the summer of 2004, a series of outdoor concerts named “Mill City Live” was introduced by the Mill City Museum. Featuring the Twin Cities’ (Minneapolis–Saint Paul) bands of various genres, the concerts are usually held in the Run Courtyard of the museum.
