Established in 1997 and spreading over 8,800 hectares, the Minneriya National Park is 25 species of mammals, 160 species of avifauna, 24 species of reptiles, and 9 species of amphibians. While on safari at the park, one can expect to have close encounters with sambar deer, sloth bears, Sri Lankan leopards, lorises monitors, saltwater crocodiles, and monkeys. Bird lovers are sure to enjoy the park, as the avifauna includes Grey Hornbills, Crimson Fronted Barbets, Spoon-billed Pelicans, and Jungle Fowls. However, the park’s biggest highlight is the elephant gatherings. The Minneriya National Park is home to the Minneriya tank which sustains large grasslands. Therefore, large herds of elephants gather at these grasslands to feed and bathe in the tank. This amazing sight of seeing over 150 – 200 elephants, in the open, in their natural habitat is one you will see hardly see anywhere else, making the Minneriya National Park one of the most exciting attractions of Sri Lanka.
