The Mirisaveti Stupa was built by the King Dutugemunu after defeating the tamil king Elara and many legends encircle the birth of this elegant stupa now gleaming in a dazzling white. It is said that after placing Buddha’s relics in a sceptre, the king had gone for a ceremonial bath in the Tissa wewa and upon returning, he could not lift the sceptre from the ground. And it is said that this is where the stupa stands today with that very sceptre containing Buddha’s sacred relics. It is also said that the king remembered that he partook a chilly curry without first offering it to the Sangha and it is to thus punish himself that he built the stupa and named it Mirisawetiya, the word “Miris” implying Chilly. The stupa standing on a ground that sprawls over 50 acres has been renovated numerous times by different kings while the most recent renovation had been done by the Cultural Triangle Fund.
