Muleeaage is an elaborate colonial bungalow which currently serves as the official residence of the President of the Maldives. Built in 1919, Muleeaage was commissioned by Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III, to serve a residence for his son; Prince Hassan Izzuddin.
Prince Izzuddin resided in this grand residence from 1920 to 1934, until he was deposed. During this time Muleeaage gained a reputation for being one of the most famous locations in Maldives, owing to the many public music and dance performances organized by Prince Izzuddin. In 1953, the bungalow was made the official residence of the President of Maldives; and continued to be so save for a few short periods of time in between. The bungalow boasts classical colonial architecture and with its picturesque lawns and landscapes. Located within the Muleeaage compound is Medhu Ziyaarath; the tomb of Abul Barakat Yoosuf Al Barbary, who is credited with bringing Islam to the islands of Maldives in the 12th Century.
