With its name literally translating to the ‘Palace of Paintings’, Museum Puri Lukisan is Ubud’s premier museum space devoted to modern Balinese art and wood carvings. Renowned as the oldest museum dedicated to art in Ubud and all of Bali, this Indonesian cultural hub is a must-visit highlight for the artistically inclined visitors exploring the holiday Mecca of the country.
Showcasing the world’s most comprehensive and exquisite collection of modern as well as traditional Balinese art work, Museum Puri Lukisan also devotes galleries to display the wood carving prowess of the island inhabitants in extensive catalogues that dates from 1930 to contemporary times. Exploring the full gamut of schools in Balinese art, the museum highlights works belonging to the various forms that have come to define local art as we know it. Examples include works belonging to Batuan, Sanur, Keliki, Ubud and Young Artist schools.
Declared open to the public as early as 1956, the inauguration of the site was attended by Mr. Mohammad Yamin, the Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs during the period and Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet without whose influence Museum Puri Lukisan would have been nothing but a dream. Its impressive collection is divided among three buildings; the galleries of the northern structure (Building I) houses the Pitamaha Gallery which showcases works by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and modern Balinese paintings dating from 1930-1945 during the pre-war era. Building II on the western fringes of the museum compound on the other hand is home to the Ida Bagus Made Gallery while Building III in the East is home to the Wayang Gallery and hosts contemporary exhibitions from time to time.
Works of I Gusti Made Deblog and Anak Agung Gde Sobrat are also found here alongside other paintings of prominent players in the Balinese modern art scene.
