The National Maritime Museum of Galle holds a story Sri Lanka’s colourful marine history featuring exhibits from ship structures to items on the ships!
About Galle
The sunny south coast city, Galle is a hop, skip and a jump away from the bustling city of Colombo. The Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century. Walking through the ancient ramparts of the fort are one of the many things to do in Galle.
About the museum
The National Maritime Museum is located within the protective walls of the ancient Galle Fort. Inside, you will find artefacts extracted from the numerous shipwrecks off the coast of Galle, which vary from bullets to smoking pipes. There are also a number of ship structures for visitors to gawk at.
Then
The fort was initially opened in May 1992 in an old Dutch Warehouse. During the disastrous 2004 tsunami, the exhibits were destroyed but the building remained intact.
Now
A visit to the National Maritime Museum in Galle is recommended by anyone, especially if you’re staying at a hotel such as Cantaloupe Aqua.
