Sri Lanka is tropical island paradise with numerous attractions, tourist destinations, and iconic landmarks. Its rich heritage and vibrant culture have molded the Sri Lankan social fabric into a colorful and diverse one, making the Sri Lankan experience truly exotic and unique. One can experience ancient landmarks, breath-taking coastal features, stunning natural beauty, a thriving ecosystem and various recreational attractions as well. One of Sri Lanka’s top destinations is Colombo, and one of the most recommended Colombo hotels is the Berjaya Hotel Colombo.
Colombo, being the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, is home to many attractions. An attraction which has served as one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks since its inception is the National Zoological Gardens. The National Zoological Gardens, or the Dehiwala Zoo, is Sri Lanka’s largest and premier zoo. With over 350 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and marine life, the National Zoological Garden showcases some of Sri Lanka’s most unique creatures, while also displaying fauna from all over the globe.
Established in 1936, the National Zoological Garden is located on Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha in Dehiwala, Colombo. The National Zoological Garden was one of the first efforts of educating the Sri Lankan public on wildlife and is a key institution in wildlife conservation efforts. Spreading over a vast area, the National Zoological Garden is one of Colombo’s most visited attractions and is a great place to spend the day at. The zoo is home to over 4000 animals belonging to over 350 species, and includes Asian elephants, lions, jaguars, tigers, various primates, sloth bears and brown bears, hippopotamuses, oryx, anacondas, turtles, hawks and egrets. The Asian elephants, the bird houses and the reptile house are some of the highlights of the zoo. The zoo is also famous for its daily elephant and sea lion shows. The recently initiated educational programs on chimpanzees by the local star “Sanju” the chimp, is also a highlight of the zoo. With its many exciting species of wildlife and a beautiful layout, the National Zoological Garden is well worth a visit.
