Langkawi Bird Paradise & Wildlife Park is just what its name suggests. Set in five acres by Jalan Ayer Hangat, its surroundings resemble a tropical garden. 2,500 exotic birds from 150 species, fish, mammals and reptiles make up the park’s collection. The biggest attraction is its walk in aviary Asia’s largest. Here visitors can not only see free flying birds in their natural habitat but be entertained and interact with them by offering tidbits. A 15 meter high manmade waterfall adds to the impression of a lush tropical garden. It may be the only wildlife park in the world that provides covered walkways all the way through and a personal guide at no cost. Appropriate bags of food can be bought at the entrance to feed animals and birds of your choice. The birds seem quite tame as they show no concern when taking food directly from the hands of visitors. One of several beach resorts Langkawi, the Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa is close to many city attractions.
The macaws, palm cockatoos, flamingo, mandarin ducks in their pond and salt water crocodiles in their special enclosure are the first zoo inhabitants that visitors will encounter. An orchid garden separates the mammal enclosures. Monkeys, mouse deer, civet cats, several rodents ranging from Guinea pigs to raccoons to the Malayan porcupine and Prairie dogs and cuddly rabbits and friendly donkeys are found in the mammals section. The large walk in aviary is the biggest attraction. Here visitors get to meet smaller varieties of birds. Large raptors like vultures, the Brahmini Kite, the White Bellied Sea Eagle and owls are also denizens of the park. Gloves are provided to anyone who dares to let the eagle perch on their wrists. Other large birds of note include the blue peacock, the white and blue peacock, the silver pheasant and a collection of flightless birds from Australia and Africa. The red eared slider and the reticulated python make up the reptile collection while the rare giant Aarapaima and the Arowana from South America are among the amphibians. The park also hosts several fun events throughout the year with the participation of its birds and animals.
