Abu Dhabi might not be the first option that comes to mind when thinking of nature and wildlife drives. However, there are habitats in and around the city that are home to a diverse mix of species that will make for some memorable sightings. So, here’s a look at some of these drives and what to expect.
Cityside Attractions
Now, if you’re staying at one of the island resorts in Abu Dhabi – say, for instance, the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara – you don’t have to venture too far to see some wildlife, as the island itself will have so much to offer. But if you are staying in the city in central Abu Dhabi properties, options like the Emirates Park Zoo or the Falcon Hospital can make for some great visits!
In the Mangroves
The mangrove forest that borders the city is some of the most biodiverse locations in the entire Middle East! These are home to all kinds of amazing creatures that range from prancing gazelles to rare turtles. Be sure to bring some binoculars to spot all the birdlife native to these parts as well.
Saadiyat Island
If you’re really looking to immerse yourself in the wilderness of Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island is the place to be. The wind-whipped landscape is famous for its towering sand dunes as well as the huge flocks of flamingos that call the place home.
Sir Bani Yas Island
This is the largest island you’ll find off the coast of Abu Dhabi and has been named as one of the most sustainable tourist destinations in the world. Iconic species like the Arabian oryx and Somali ostrich call this island home.
