Originating since 1656, the Old Friday Mosque is the oldest in Maldives. Made of coral stone and carved with intricate designs and scripts from the Quran, this mosque is definitely worth a visit.
Where is it?
The mosque can be found in the busy city of Male. It’s located right adjacent to the Muliaage and opposite the Medhuziyaaraiy in Male. If your travel agency such as Black Kite Travel has planned a Male city tour during your luxury Maldives holidays, drop by the mosque for a quick visit.
Visit
If you want to visit the mosque, you will have to be properly attired and well dressed. Visitors will have to get a formal request from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs prior to their visit. Do keep in mind to be respectful with the officials!
Features
The prayer hall is fitted with a massive burgundy carpet that can accommodate up to 1,372 people at one time. The mosque has 3 entrances and 2 prayer halls that are surrounded by antechambers on all 3 sides.
History
Built on the ruins of an old temple facing west and not towards Mecca, worshippers of the mosque had to pray facing a corner after the mosque was built.
