Abu Dhabi is the capital and second largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi is one of the most metropolitan emirates of the United Arab Emirates, and is considered to be a regional hub of finance, trade, and culture. Abu Dhabi is also one of the Middle East’s most popular tourist destinations with renowned attractions such as Ferrari World, Emirates Palace, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Yas Island, and the Emirates National Auto Museum. On Sir Bani Yas Island, hotels such as the tranquil Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts are great options for accommodation.
Abu Dhabi has a rich history, and many of its old structures are still preserved to this date. One such structure, which is of immense cultural and archeological value, is Qasr-al Hosn. Also known as the White Fort of Abu Dhabi, this 17th century fortress is considered to be the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi. Although once a great fortress, Qasr-al Hosn today is a historic landmark, symbolic of Abu Dhabi’s birth, which has slowly transformed into one of the city’s most inspiring archeological attractions.
Qasr-al Hosn was built in 1761, and was, at first, only a watch tower. The tower was built to protect the only freshwater well in the region from raiders. Subsequently the tower was expanded into a fort by Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan. Over the years the fort was converted into a strong fortress, and served as the residence of the Sheikh and housed many official buildings. Soon settlements sprung around the fort, and the rest is history. Today, Qasr-al Hosn stands as a symbol of Abu Dhabi’s origins, history and strength, and is one of the most visited landmarks in Abu Dhabi. The gleaming white washed walls of the fort house many towers and fascinating buildings. The highlights of the fort include a museum with many of Abu Dhabi’s historic artifacts and collections of weapons used throughout the ages. Qasr-al Hosn is also the site of the grand and spectacular Qasr-al Hosn Annual Festival.
