The Pearl Qatar is a massive artificial island that is being built off the coast of Doha. It lies around four hundred metres away from the West Bay Lagoon area. The island spans nearly four million square metres in area. Designed by internationally renowned architectural firm Callison, the island will look like a string of pearls once it is completed. Both the island’s look and name were inspired by its location on top of one of Qatar’s most lucrative pearl-diving spots.
It is a little-known fact that Qatar was once a major producer of pearls. However, the local pearl industry eventually went into decline because it was unable to keep up with Japanese competitors. The name ‘Pearl Qatar’ was chosen to reflect Qatar’s historic roots and the country’s strong ties to the ocean. The development also takes inspiration from other cultures, a reflection of the multicultural populace that will eventually live here. After all, Pearl Qatar is the only place in Qatar where foreigners can buy and own land. As of early 2012, there were an estimated 5000 people living here, but once the project is finished in 2015, it will be able to handle up to 45,000 residents. A rich city with excellent public infrastructure, Doha (Qatar’s capital) is a treat to visit. Although the local bus service has only been operational for a few years, it is very good. The bus service covers nearly every part of the city. There are also plenty of taxis around, with many of them featuring metres. Since Doha is home to a diverse populace, one can find restaurants that cater to different palates. Whether one craves Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, Thai or any other type of cuisine, it is easy to find.
Tourists also have plenty of excellent options when it comes to accommodation in the capital. Those who want to stay in a luxury hotel in Doha can try the Millennium Hotel Doha. This quality Doha hotel enjoys a convenient location and each well-appointed room comes fully equipped with all the latest modern amenities, making it a terrific option for both business and leisure travellers.
