Located a short distance away from Colombo is the city of Kelaniya. While Kelaniya has many attractions, its most prominent cultural and historic attraction is Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya. The Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya is regarded as being one of the holiest Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka for the reason that ancient chronicles have records that state that Lord Buddha visited the site of the temple on his third and final visit to Sir Lanka circa 500BC, and preached while seated on a throne laden with precious stones. Since then the temple has been of immense cultural historic value to Sri Lankans, and the temple itself is considered to be one of the most revered archaeological monuments in Sri Lanka.
The Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya was believed to have been developed to the stunning temple that it is today over many decades. Originally the temple was only a large stupa which is believed to enshrine the throne that Lord Buddha sat upon. During the Kotte Kingdom, the temple was at its peak, although the temple subsequently declined in prominence during the colonial period of Sri Lanka. Today, however, the temple has been restored to its former glory and boasts amazing architecture and a host of ancient relics and monuments of immense cultural significance. The statue of the reclining Buddha at the temple, and the artwork and paintings at the temple are regarded as being phenomenal feats, making the Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya well worth visiting.
