An iconic fifth century rock fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is definitely a must visit attraction in Sri Lanka. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your trip.

Getting There
Sigiriya can be found in the Matale District and is around 4 to 4.5 hours from the commercial capital, Colombo. The town of Dambulla is within a 30 minute drive away and those in search of the best hotels in Sigiriya to base themselves at will find several options to choose from.
Opening Hours
Sigiriya is open from 7am to around 5.30pm; it is advisable to make the ascent either early morning or closer to evening in order to avoid the noontime sun. Staying at hotels within easy reach of this site such as Sigiriya Jungles will make transport easier as well.

There is much to see on your visit to Sigiriya including water gardens, bathing pools and landscaped areas which can be found on the way leading up to the rock. The Summit
To reach the summit you have to walk up steps that have two huge lion paws at its base on either side. Once at the top you will be greeted by awe-inspiring views of the surrounding jungles as well as the ruins of the palace that once stood proudly at the apex of Sigiriya.
