The country being a predominantly Buddhist country has a rich heritage associated with Buddhism. One of the important Buddhist landmarks here is the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Long years ago it was just a mere monastery hidden among the lush forests. However, the monastery gained significant prominence when the Tian Tan Buddha statue, formerly known as the Big Buddha was erected here in 1993. Facing the north and looking over the Chinese population this 34 metre high statue attracts pilgrims from around Asia. The statue is a marvellous bronze structure. The statue was created with great detail and it took almost 12 years to complete. Great attention has been paid to the eyes, lips, incline of the head and also the right hand that delivers blessings. In order to get a better view of the statue one must climb 268 steps to get to the top. The summit also offers splendid views of the seas and the mountains at the base.
Opposite this statue is what is known to be the “Buddhist world in the south” – The Buddhist Sanctums, home to many monks.
