Preah Khan is 12th century temple located in Angkor, Cambodia. The name Preah Khan means “sacred sword”. The temple was set up to mark the victory of king jayavarma VII. However it was also used as a Buddhist monastery and school where over 1000 monks were engaged in activities. The temple however has a simple rectangular layout , however within the temple one can find many interesting carvings and passages of historic value.

The temple Preah Khan is dedicated to Jayavarma VII’s mother. Even though initially solely dedicated to Buddhism, it can be found that later the temple has been vandalized and there have been Hindu carvings done over the Bhudhist carvings that were already present at the time.
The restoration work at the temple premises has been bare minimal , hence there has been large amount of vegetation that has taken over the temple premises. However the access to the temple is not restricted.
Since the early 1990s’ the temple is looked after by the World Monument Fund. The entire temple bears evidence to the great architectural significance that existed during the period of the Khmer empire.
Situated in close proximity to the archeological park of is another such attraction known as the Ta Prohm. Ta Prohm is a similar temple. A not to be missed for those visiting Angkor is the Angkor Wat , recommended by most as a must do.
