Although only the second largest dzong where size is concerned, the Punakha Dzong has gained a reputation of being the most majestic dzong in all of Bhutan. Hence, it is a landmark that anyone visiting Bhutan simply must visit!

Built in 1638 as a fortress, the Punakha Dzong serves as a large complex encompassing administrative, civil and religious elements. The dzong has, since its inception, been a symbol of culture, heritage and power, is one of the landmarks that evokes a great amount of pride in the Bhutanese people. Lovers of Asian architectural styles are sure to be mesmerized by the colossal structure, as it is truly an architectural and engineering masterpiece.

The dzong was designed to emulate the great Buddhist values, and one can expect to find several Buddhist motifs ingrained in the dzong’s architecture. The sheer beauty of the towers of the dzong, its woodwork, columns, ceiling designs, and wall paintings are sure to dazzle almost anyone. The dzong is home to many temples, numerous carvings, rows of statues of Lord Buddha and other deities, and many other aesthetically pleasing features.
