The Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is an ancient sea temple in Bali that was constructed during the 11th century. Luhur directly translates into ‘something of divine origin.’ Bali has nine directional temples that the people of Bali often visit to ward off the evil spirit and the Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is one such temple. The temple is referred to as the “temple of the sea” for two reasons. One is that it is perched over a cliff overlooking the sea, but mostly importantly, the temple is dedicated to the spirits of the sea. In terms of architecture, the temple features some beautiful coral rock and also some rock carvings too, which have been preserved through the harsh environment. There are two parts to this temple, one which is open to everyone and the other which is open only to those of the Hindu faith.
It is situated in the village of Pecatu, which is a very interesting and vibrant village. When you do visit the temple, spare a few hours so you can truly enjoy and see everything that the temple has to offer you. The temple offers some spectacular views and among them is the wonderful sunset. The waves of the sea are breathtaking and if you love to surf, you will definitely appreciate the choice features of the shore.
Look for an Ubud hotel to stay at while in Bali. You will enjoy an indulgence in the form of a luxury retreat Bali at a stellar property such as the Uma Bali.
