Americans have always believed in volunteerism as the best way of uplifting the community. Numerous service organizations formed all through out the United States is testament to this. Some of the finest gifts from this country to the world have been its service organizations such as Rotary, which is represented in almost every country on earth. The Great Human Race held at the Holocaust and Humanity Education centre is another example of this true American spirit of helping others and taking matters into one’s own hands.
The Holocaust and Humanity Education centre (CHHE) is a non-profit organization based in Cincinnati that focuses on educating the public, raising money for victims and trying to incorporate the lessons learnt from this great human tragedy into everyday lives. The term Holocaust is actually derived from the Greek language and means to burn whole, this is an apt description as many as 6 million European Jews were inhumanely slaughtered and whole families were torn apart. Many survivors of this tragedy harbored deep psychological wounds for the rest of their lives.
The aim of the CHHE is not to dwell on the negative grave aspects of the period but to learn from it and move on. It attempts to foster understanding and tolerance among communities, the lack of which they feel lead to the genocide committed during the Second World War. The centre stretches its wings far beyond Cincinnati and carries out awareness programs on a national scale.
The Great Human Race which will be held on the 15th of May for the second consecutive year is one the major fundraising projects of the CHHE. The race is run as two separate events of 5 km’s and 10 km’s. The event promises to be a fun filled one, as it culminates with live entertainment provided by a Caribbean steel drum band called Steel Rain.
