Bang Pa-In is a town located to the north of Bangkok in Thailand. This town was formed by King Prasat Thong of Ayutthaya in the 1630’s and the Royal Palace at Bang Pa-In was built there as a summer house for the Siamese royal family.
The Bang Pa-In Royal Palace is also referred to as the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace and it is situated on the banks of the river Chao Phraya. Even though the site was established during the 18th century it lay unoccupied till the early 19th century when King Mongkut started restoring it.
The compound comprises several illustrious buildings that are covered by the large park area; during hot summer days, visitors use an electric cart to go around the grounds. The architectural styles used in the building structures are unique and dotted by not only the greenery but also waterways and ponds. Since the palace consists of several residential buildings, the only area that can be accessed by the public is the Wehat Chamroon palace where all materials used for construction was brought from China. There are various statues spread across the garden area, including European statues as well as attractions built during the time of King Rama V in remembrance of members of his family.
There are various sections in the palace that visitors are allowed to go to since King Bhumibol Adulyadei and his family still use the site for special occasions and banquets. It is open daily from 8am to 5pm and an admission fee is charged. Visitors can go on a 25 minute river jet ride that leaves the palace’s pier every 1 hour. When travelling to the Ayutthaya province during your holiday, the Bang Pa-In palace is a place you must stopover at and explore.
