The Ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral is a revered holy site in Macau and is visited by worshippers and tourists alike, until this day.
History
The actual construction of this Catholic Church began in the year 1602, and after the competition, people were in awe with its magnificence. It was one of the best looking, and most prominent churches in all of Macau. Every Macau hotel used to be filled to the brim with visitors who came into town to visit the church.
What it was used for
In the beginning, it was a Catholic Church governed by the Jesuits, later, they were sent away, and the place was used as an army barrack, until the fire burned it to the ground.
The Fire
In 1835, the church burned down, and everything but its gorgeous facade and staircase at the front fell to the ground in ashes. The surviving front wall had most of the religious and historical carvings and inscriptions on it, luckily.
Now
Located in the vicinity of many tourist friendly hotels like Hotel Okura Macau, the Ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral still stands strong, with the steel beams holding up the facade after years of winds, rain and sunshine.
