Types of turtles
Sri Lanka’s golden coasts are a popular breeding grounds for many sea turtles and you’ll find all 6 endangered species visiting the island, such as the Leatherback, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill and Green turtle.
The Project
As these turtles are on the endangered list, the folks of the project decided to protect and save the turtle populations by gathering eggs from the beach and storing it in their hatchery before releasing it back to the sea.
Threats
Sea turtles face a lot of threats, from consuming garbage found in the sea to being caught in nets and at the end of boat propellers or being poached for their meat and shell. Baby sea turtles; are usually eaten by predators or stolen by fishermen to be sold for meat.
