It is widely known that Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms gave birth to some of the most iconic archeological landmarks that are in existence today. One such landmark, which is arguably the most famous archeological and historical landmark of Sri Lanka, is the awe-inspiring Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The Sigiriya Rock is a massive 200m tall rock, which King Kashyapa of Sri Lanka saw as being a great location to build a fortress around. Thus, somewhere during the 4th Century, an elaborate and almost impregnable fortress was constructed around the rock to create what is now known as the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
The Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an engineering and architectural marvel, considering the technology available during the 4th Century. King Kashyapa had his Royal Palace at the top of the rock, overlooking the entire region, the foundation and ruins of which can be seen even today. Around the rock are many scenic gardens which are classified as the Boulder Gardens, the Terrace Gardens, and the Water Gardens, the latter of which still conducts water even after 1700 years! Some of the highlights of Sigiriya include the amazing bathing pools constructed on the summit of the rock, the Mirror Wall; which is said to have been polished to such perfection that it had reflective attributes, and stunning Lion Gate, and, of course, the Sigiriya Frescos; a large “gallery” of maidens painted on plaster on the western face of the rock, which have survived the forces of nature for over 1700 years.
