Sri Lanka is the land of tropical beaches, hilly tea plantations, lush rice fields and ancient ruins surrounded by a vast Indian Ocean. From one coast to the other, it is only a few hours to drive. If you want to experience the sights and sounds along the way in a comfortable ride, consider the option of car rental; Sri Lanka has several reputable companies that rent vehicles with drivers.
Sigiriya is located within Sri Lanka’s ‘Cultural Triangle’, in the Central Province. What was once the palace of King Kassapa is one of the key attractions, not to be missed. If you are travelling up from Colombo in a vehicle from Casons Rent a Car, the drive will take you just over four hours. The palace was built one thousand six hundred years ago after the king murdered his father by plastering him up in a wall and taking Sigiriya meaning ‘Lion Rock’ as his kingdom. He chose a great black rock as the site for his kingdom and converted it to resemble a majestic lion. King Kassapa’s palace in the sky was entered through the open mouth of the lion that rested between two giant paws made of stone. They remain to be seen to this day. The king lived a life of luxury surrounded by courtiers and a harem. His high vantage point allowed him to see approaching enemies, a necessary measure as King Kassapa had many enemies, including his own brother, because of his murderous act. Beautifully landscaped gardens surrounded the base of the rock, complete with ponds and dancing fountains.
The Sigiriya Museum located nearby is a smaller replica of the fortress itself. Wander through the museum, admire the artefacts on display, marvel at the architectural feat and get a sense of what life was like during the rule of King Kassapa.
