Steeped in history, the island of Sri Lanka boasts a proud and rich heritage that can be experienced especially when visiting its Cultural Triangle. Home to ancient temples and grand monuments, this part of the island is also where you will come across one of the most iconic sites of Sri Lanka: Sigiriya or the Lion Rock.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this towering attraction dates back to the 5th century when King Kasyapa turned the rock into a seemingly impregnable fortress. Set amidst jungles and fascinating natural landscapes, Sigiriya not only offers a journey back in time as it were, but also a chance to witness the amazing ingenuity of the people back then who transformed the site into a place where the king and his subjects could live in safety.
At the base of the rock, one will come across the Water Gardens, which were once used in order to provide water to the Royal baths. These expertly created systems contained an underground network which was used in order to distribute water. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the gardens while halfway up the rock. Continuing your journey upwards, you will come across one of Sigiriya’s most famous attractions, the Sigiriya Frescoes. These ancient frescoes of women have been carefully painted onto the rock face and can be seen within a rock shelter. Flash photography is not allowed here, although you can take pictures of these frescoes that have become an iconic attraction in their own right.
Past the frescoes and further upwards is the Mirror Wall, which has scrawling or “graffiti” dating back to the 7th and 11th centuries and which include poems. Soon you will find yourself at the Lion Platform which features the huge paws of the remains of what would have been a massive lion made from stone. Passing between the lion paws, one makes the final ascent to the summit. Set amidst stunning 360 degree vistas, the summit is home to the ruins of the once royal palace and lets you imagine what life would have been like those many centuries ago.
