Time for a History Lesson
According to legends, it is believed that King Kashyapa murdered his father King Dhatusena by entombing him in a wall. Seeing this; the rightful heir to the throne, prince Mogollana fled to India. Knowing that his half-brother would return seeking vengeance Kashyapa made Sigiriya as his capital and sought refuge in on the Sigiriya rock, on top of which he constructed a royal palace.

Located in the area surrounding the bottom of the rocky outcrop, Gardens of Sigiriya is one of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. Filled with water fountains and masterfully crafted statues, the gardens are one of the most beautiful sites to see when you are in Sigiriya.
