Silpa Bhirasri was born Corrado Feroci, a native of Florence, Italy. He came to Thailand sometime during the 1920s after being invited by King Rama V. He would change his birth name after being given Thai citizenship. Bhirasri eventually founded a school for fine arts in Thailand, that would go on to train the country’s best artists. The organisation he founded would eventually develop into the Silpakorn University, the premier art school in Thailand. Bhirasri’s office inside the university has been converted into a museum honouring him.
A trip to the Silpa Bhirasri National Museum is a highly recommended activity for art lovers and those interested in learning more about Thai culture. It gives visitors a taste of the country’s vibrant, underground art scene. The Silpa Bhirasri National Museum, located in the Thai capital of Bangkok, is a museum dedicated entirely to modern art. The museum is divided into two parts. One part houses amazing contemporary artworks by exceptionally talented local artists. The other part is devoted to the life and works of Silpa Bhirasri, widely considered to be the ‘Father of Modern Art in Thailand’.
Among the things one can find inside the museum are paintings, sculptures, and sketches by Bhirasri (including replicas) as well as works by his most well-known students. There are also photographs and other memorabilia. The interior has been well preserved and remains mostly unchanged since Bhirasri worked there. The museum is situated in the Fine Arts Department of the Silpakorn University. Opening hours are between 8 am and 4 pm on all weekdays.
