If you are travelling to the highlands of Sri Lanka, you are bound to come across neat rows of tea and dense jungles. The hill country of the island is home to the Hindu community and therefore some colourful kovils as well.
Bhakta Hanuman Kovil
Located in the green mountains of the island is this place of worship famed for its 16ft statue of Hanuman. This statue is revered by the local Hindu devotees.
The significance of the temple
This very spot is believed to be where Hanuman first set foot in Sri Lanka. The deity arrived on the island in order to save Sita from King Ravana.
Ravanaboda
Opposite the Kovil is a mountain range called Ravanaboda. This is the place where King Ravana’s army was positioned during the war with Rama.
The valley
The Mahaweli river runs through the valley of Ravanaboda and Ramboda. The epic battle took place here and victory was to Rama who had the assistance of Hanuman. The peak of Ravanaboda is nicknamed “Sleeping Hanuman”.
Ramboda falls
This is one of the best attractions to visit in Nuwara Eliya. Family bungalows the likes of The Lavender House would be able to organise an easy excursion to the site.
