The southern region of Sri Lanka offers some amazing places to visit and mostly wildlife to explore. Sithulpawwa is one significant historic and religious attraction that you cannot miss out on.
This sacred place is situated 18 km east of Katharagama which is also a pilgrimage site. This is in the Hambantota District in the south of Sri Lanka. Add this to your list of places to visit with Leopard Safaris Yala.
The great monument dates back to the 2nd century. It is said in the books of history that the monastery was built by King Kavantissa.
The name “Sithulpawwa” was derived from the ancient words “Chiththala Pabbatha”. This translated to “the hill of the quiet mind”.
What to see
This religious site is home to amazing historic remnants of the Anuradhapura period. Bodhisattva images, stone figurines, and paintings from this period are a few things you will see here. It’s worth visiting if you are lodged at one of the Yala hotels.
