The Pura Luhur or the Uluwatu Temple popularly considered to be one of the six spiritual pillars of Bali. Located on a 70-meter-high seaside cliff, the temple offers breathtaking views of the glorious blue ocean waves hugging the foot of the cliff.
Location
The temple is located in in Uluwatu in the Badung Regency, Bali on a clifftop 250 feet above the Indian Ocean. The magnificent location and easy reach from many Bali resorts that are located in Uluwatu such as Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort makes it a popular tourist spot.
History
The temple was created with the initiation of monk ‘Empu Kunturan’ who was involved in the initiation of some other important temples in Bali. The padmasana shrines of the temple is said have being constructed by sage Dang Hyang Nirartha who is said to have attained moksha in this temple.
Main features
The majestic main shrine, a courtyard behind that, the statue of Dhang Hyang Dwijendra facing the Indian Ocean. There are two entrances to the temple with split gates adorned with flower and leaf carvings.
Getting there
The temple is open from 9.00 to 18.00 daily. When visiting keep in mind that the temple is usually accessible via the bypass main road Jimbaran and ascend the road up to Uluwatu.
