The original modern art collection that was owned by Dr Bernhard Sprengel is housed in these premises – hence its name. Dr Bernhard Sprengel’s collection includes French Modern Art and German Expressionism. During the latter part of the 20th century and also during the 21st century the collection here has expended to accommodate the important periods of contemporary art. The exhibits are organized thematically and altogether cover an impressive range: French Cubism, Minimal, Post Minimalism, Post-war Abstract, Nouveau Realisme, Informalism, and Conceptual Art. Spaces at the museum devoted to Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Ferdinand Leger, Paul Klee, Emil Nolde and Max Bechmann, are favourites amongst all visual arts lovers.
The establishment also gives prominence to artists’ groups, movements and personalities. Movements such as Surrealism, Cubism, groups such as ‘Der Blaue Reiter’, and ‘Die Brücke’, are also represented at the Sprengel by individual pieces. One of the most interesting explorations for most enthusiasts of the subject are the El Lissitzky’s ‘Cabinet of Abstraction’ and the recreated Merz room of Kurt Schwitters, both providing an exceptional viewing opportunity for the visitors. Other elements of the exhibition that adds uniqueness are the important pieces of art from the 21st century: Hans Arp, Emil Schumacher, Lyonel Feininger, and James Turrel are included here.
In 1994 the Sprengel Museum in Hannover was enhanced with a Department of Photography and Media. Each year this establishment hosts about 25 temporary exhibitions covering all types of period and contemporary art. Other programmes covered by the museum include numerous related lectures and symposia, and other educational programmes such as art forums.
The architectural design of the Sprengel Museum itself compliments what it houses; a concept that combined ‘public space’ and space emitting the aura of art’ portraying the museum’s encouraging nature towards free communication.
