If you love cricket then any series featuring international teams always brings about renewed interest in the game, no matter what age you are; be you the kind who yearn for the ‘golden age’ of cricket which spawned many legends or the more youthful fan who revel in the frenetic pace of the modern game. So it was no surprise that the series between Sri Lanka and the West Indies held from October to November 2015 brought about much interest especially to the cricket crazy host nation.
After wrapping up the test series 2-0, Sri Lanka sought to assert its dominance on the West Indies in the shorter forms of the game, namely the 50 and 20 over per side matches. The first two matches of the one day series took place under lights at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and in these rain shortened encounters, the host nation yet again emerged triumphant. The action then shifted to the hills as it were as the teams headed to Kandy, in Sri Lanka’s central region. Watching a game here amidst mountain backdrops is one of the most captivating things to do in Kandy for cricket fans. Games are played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and there are plenty of accommodation options in the region to base yourself at such as Earl’s Regent Kandy.
Unfortunately for the West Indies the shift in location did not bring with it a change in fortune as the third one day international went in the same way as the first two as Sri Lanka wrapped up a 3-0 series whitewash, in yet another game that was shortened due to rain. Pallekele was again the venue for the first match of the rapid-fire T-20 series which saw the host’s continue their winning run emerging comfortable victors. The second and last game of the series shifted back to Colombo, and under lights at the R Premadasa Stadium, the West Indies finally registered their first win and levelled the T-20 series at 1-1. While the entire series may have been a rather one sided affair, it did bring a lot of cricketing action both to Colombo and to the hills of Kandy!
