Colombo has many religious and architecturally interesting churches to its name, and St Anthony’s Church is the most popular of them all.
Being a universal saint who has impressed audience all over the world, this church was built in honour of the great Saint Anthony of Lisbon, who died at the age of 36, back in the year 1231.
This Kochikade Church is the most popular shrine in Sri Lanka and attracts visitors from all over the country every year, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The church itself is not in the suburbs or in a quiet place in Colombo, it is, in fact, in one of the busiest places in Colombo, being right by the harbour and the busy Pettah market area. It is also within close proximity to many luxury apartments in Colombo the likes of Cinnamon Life Colombo and more.
Once you enter the church, the noise of the busy Pettah streets outside subsides as if through magic, and you feel like you are inside a different realm. The statue of St Anthony is seen as soon as you enter the doors, and this 200-year-old idol might be small in size but has quite an arresting quality about it.
