The magnificent St. Lawrence’s Church in Macau is an esteemed place of worship which always draws the interest of the observer. The initial shrine at this site was constructed in the 16th century by the Jesuits, which makes the church amongst the most ancient in Macau. However the dimensions and appearance of this place of worship as they are seen today are the result of reconstruction in 1846.
The shrine is situated on the area’s southern shoreline, seemingly overlooking the sapphire blue seas. In times past the families and loved ones of Portuguese seamen would congregate on the church’s front steps to pray for their safe return. This fact led to the place of worship being called the ‘hall of calming winds’.
The architecture of St. Lawrence’s Church may be classified to be in the neo-classical mode. However it also features some tasteful Baroque ornamental elements. The locality in which the shrine stands was at one time affluent and wealthy, and this fact explains the church’s magnificent proportions and lavish decorations. Interestingly one of the imposing towers of the church once functioned as a religious prison.
There is no doubt that this splendid edifice is a delight for the eyes. This beautiful cream-coloured building with its twin towers is fronted by an ornamental gateway which is a fitting entranceway for this majestic architectural creation. The interior of the church is just as magnificent as the exterior, with cream-coloured walls, a blue ceiling and an altar adorned by a red carpet. You will also see numerous interesting statues and exquisite windows of stained glass, whilst lovely chandeliers dangle from the ceiling. The principal high altar features a handsome representation of St. Lawrence, clad in splendid attire. Above the saint you will see an angel holding a crown, adding to the splendour of the scene. The combination of these elements creates a spectacular effect, and you must take the time to fully appreciate the splendid features of the interior. A visit to this splendid place of worship will undoubtedly inspire the imagination of the observer.
