The 11 ft 2 inch tall Statue of Parakramabahu I is arguably one of the finest stone sculpture which belongs to the Polonnaruwa period. The figure which is carved on a boulder can easily be toured from the comfort of any Sri Lanka resort in its vicinity. Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa which features amongst Sri Lanka beach resorts will lead you on a journey past iconic characteristics that denote the grandeur of Polonnaruwa before eventually ending at the statuette of the great king himself.
Even though many views and theories have been expressed and brought about for discussion in relation to the identity of the carving, historians are of the view that the statue is indeed of the King Parakramabahu the Great who contributed towards the regional growth of the country. Located in close proximity to the Potgul Vehera which was an ancient library, the statue resembles a solemn look on the face of the king as he holds a book known as an “Ola” by the locals. However there are others who believe that the king in fact is holding a yoke of kingship and not a book. This breathtaking statuette which has left many historians baffled would serve as a great break away from all the surf and sand of your resort getaway.
