The Sultan Park is a very popular public park. It was established in the 16th century in what was once the garden of the Royal Palace . The park contains a variety of local flora and even some fauna, and is a tranquil refuge set amidst the bustle of the city. Tourists can enjoy the serenity of ponds filled with water lilies as they listen to the mesmerising sounds of bird song. While the Royal Palace has been razed to the ground, the entrance to the park sports a grand gate that speaks of long ago splendour.
The sole remaining wing of the Royal Palace is located within the park, and was converted into the National Museum in 1952. The museum boasts an impressive display of the islands historical and cultural artefacts, and is an apt starting point for travellers interested in learning more about the country. The exhibits range from royal antiques to traditional musical instruments. A coral stone head of the Lord Buddha dating to the 11th century, and a 13th century engrave wood panel from Hukuru Miskiiy, are two of the museums most prized possessions. The museum is closed on Fridays and public holidays.
