Tanah Lot is a rock formation halfway out to sea in Tabanan, Bali. This unique and bewitching rock formation is unusual in shape and structure and has changed along the years due to the influences of the sea swirling around it.
In the 15th century it was believed that Nirartha, a priest visited the rock to rest whilst on his travels. When fishing folk and other inhabitants brought the priests gifts, he advised them to build a shrine on the rock as he believed it to have powerful mystic and spiritual influences. This was done and to-date many Balinese worship devotedly at the temple. It is also believed that a large snake, thought to have been created out of the scarf of the priest Nirartha, acts as the keeper of the temple. Many other poisonous sea snakes are believed to dwell in caves at the foot of the rock to guard the temple from intruders.
This temple on Tanah Lot is one of seven such temples that are situated on rock promontories off the island of Bali and each has been built in a chain like manner whereby the next temple can be seen.
What is most fascinating about Tanah Lot and what keeps locals and tourists coming back are the spectacular and breathtaking view of sunset that can be witnessed from Tanah Lot. Perhaps due to its location or the manner in which the sun’s rays cast its dazzling shadows or the mystical feel of the location, Tanah Lot’s sunset will stun you with its amazing beauty.
Restaurants and cafes have been set up along the coastline in order for visitors may enjoy the sunset in tranquil bliss, perhaps with a thirst quencher and something to eat on the side. For the keen nature photographer, this sunset is an opportunity not to be missed.
