If you want to experience snorkelling at a whole new level, nothing beats the chance of swimming beside humongous manta rays and whale sharks. Sounds like an adventure you want to try? Then Hanifaru Bay in Maldives is the place for you!

Hanifaru Bay
Part of the Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Hanifaru Bay is home to the largest manta ray feeding station in the world. Around a 12 minute speedboat ride from Milaidhoo Island Maldives, this bay is rich in plankton during particular periods of the year, attracting both manta rays and whale sharks.
Exploring the Bay
Those planning to explore Hanifaru Bay can do so by heading to Dharavandhoo Island where you will find the Hanifaru Visitor Centre, managed by the Baa Atoll Conservation Fund. Another alternative is to stay at a Maldives luxury resort which will organise excursions to Hanifaru with a marine biologist guide.
The Right Season
The best time to spot these magnificent marine creatures is generally between June and November, though the “season” can start in May and run till December too. This is the period of the South West Monsoon when plankton is in abundance, providing the ideal feeding ground.
The Stars of the “Show”
The chance to snorkel beside massive whale sharks and mantas rays, which can be 12 to 24 feet in size, is truly breathtaking. Both these species are harmless, though contact with them is prohibited. Some days it’s possible to see 100 mantas rays and suffice to say have your underwater cameras ready!
