What is commonly known as the Rainbow Village is actually the Hun An Military Dependent’s Village, and it is located in Taichung, Taiwan. The village was built sometime during the 40s and 50s to serve as temporary housing for soldiers. Although it started off as temporary accommodation it soon became a permanent settlement. The village was a dull, drab place suffering from disrepair, but all that began to change once Huang Yung Fu started his labour of love. With bright splashes of paint and simplistic designs, the octogenarian veteran transformed the entire village into a giant canvas.
Huang Yung Fu’s designs can be found all over the village, on the walls of houses, on roofs, and even on the roads. While the designs themselves are not very sophisticated, they contain animals, birds and even people. The bright colours and simple art may lead one to imagine an army of ten year olds equipped with lots of paint, but the truth is Huang Yung Fu does all the painting himself. Once photos of his paintings were posted online it immediately put the settlement on the map.
Now nicknamed the ‘Rainbow Village’ the military settlement attracts many visitors, local and foreign. It has quickly become one of the ‘must visit’ spots in Taichung. The village is very small and it will not take a lot of time to visit. The best way to get there is by cab, as otherwise there is a good chance of getting lost.
Taichung is one of the largest cities in Taiwan and is quite a popular tourist destination within the country. The city has several interesting tourist attractions and visitors are bound to enjoy exploring the various museums, parks and art galleries found here. Public transport is somewhat limited and while Taichung has an excellent network of buses it lacks a train system.
Tourists can easily overcome the slight difficulties in travel by choosing hotels in Taichung that have a central location. Those looking for centrally located accommodation might enjoy staying at the Millennium Vee Hotel Taichung. The Taichung hotel also comes with a variety of facilities that guests will find very helpful.
