Tanah Lot is located in Tabanan about 20 kilometres from Denpasar. The Pura Tanah Lot is a temple that has been built on a rock formation and is a favourite tourist hotspot. Tanah Lot means, the “land in the sea” and you would find similar rock formations around the Balinese coast.
History has it that the priest Nirartha of the 15th century was the main reason behind this temple to be made. During his visit to the south coast he has taken rest in this secluded rock and later on has instructed the fishermen who brought him food to make a shrine on the rock as he felt this would be an ideal place to worship the Balinese Gods. From that day onwards the Pura Tanah Lot temple has been a place of worship of the Balinese people and also of the Hindus. The Tanah Lot has been sculptured further by Mother Nature through the ocean tides lapping against the rock for many decades resulting in it being given more beauty and shape. Balinese mythology has it that the Pura Tanah Lot temple is guarded by poisonous snakes against evil spirits and intruders.
