Located in downtown Minneapolis, the Target Centre is in the heart of Minnesota. Sponsored by Target Corporation, it was ranked among the best arenas around the world in 2009. Initially launched to the public on 13th October 1990, the entire complex took an estimate of 27 months to build. A large arena, it has the capacity to hold 20 to 500 people, inclusive of 68 suites and 702 club seats.
Known as the first major arena that was designated non-smoking in the U.S, Target Centre is home to one of the famed NBA’s teams, the Minnesota Timberwolves and their sister team WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. Both teams most often play all their games at the basketball court at the centre.
Tracing back to its past, the centre was owned by the Timberwolves. Originally built by them, they owned the arena in the 1990s. Later, it was purchased by the City of Minneapolis in 1995. However, change in management continued where there were many significant changes that took place. In May 2004, the ownership changed from Clear Channel Entertainment to a company called Midwest Entertainment Group, which was a joint venture by Nederlander and Timberwolves Concerts. At the time, the centre underwent a series of renovations incorporating many changes to its infrastructure.
One of the most notable changes that occurred is the replacement of the original seats. Reaching a total of 19,006, new seats were included which was an addition of 1500 seats. The lower bowl of the arena was reconfigured to be made more fan-friendly. Furthermore, the original scoreboard was replaced as the management brought in a state-of-the-art video screen which was 9 by 16 foot long. Introducing a new luxury lounge, the centre also made an access for guests with disabilities.
Finally on the 2nd of May 2007, the management contract of Target Centre was signed over to AEG Facilities. Presently, the arena is owned by the city whilst the day to day operations are handled and taken care by AEG facilities.
AEG being a performance driven corporation organized many events at the centre. Some of them have included spectacular concerts by Miley Cyrus, Metallica, Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Beyonce and the American Idol Live Tour. Having a myriad of events every month, guests will surely enjoy the entertainment options Target Centre offers.
