Located between Tibet and India, the Kingdom of Butan, also known as the Land of the Dragon, is home to some of the most exquisite temples and monasteries in the world. Although the population of Bhutan is only around 700,000, there are over 40 monasteries gracing the landscape. The Taktsand Monastery is a beautiful structure located in the pristine surroundings of the Paro valley, and it is famous for housing the Famous guru Padmasambhava. Situated 3000 feet above the valley below this picturesque monastery is the most renowned cultural symbol of Bhutan.
Built in 1638, the famous Punakha “Dzong” served as a protective fortress at the time it was built, and it is the administrative centre of Punakha. One of the country’s most magnificent structures, it holds the title of being the second-oldest dzong in the country, and houses some sacred relics and remains of important spiritual figures in Bhutan’s past. The festival Demoche is a grand celebration held here, marking the defeat of the Tibetans who invaded the country in 1639. This temple is situated on the confluence of river Pho Chhu and Moh Chhu.
Ten miles north of Thimphu, the Tango monastery, built in 1688, sits in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings. Built over a cave that many believe is home to miracles, this intriguing monastery has 6 smaller temples within it. Referred to as the “door to heaven” owing evidently to the natural beauty that surrounds it, the Tongsa temple is situated on the Black Mountains. Built in 1648, it is known as the largest in the country. Rinpung Dzong is probably the first temple you encounter when in Paro, once you land at the only international airport located here. Having faced an earthquake in 1800s and a fire that damaged most of it in 1907, this monastery has been reconstructed several times over the years.
