The extent to which a Buddhist’s devotion to his religion can run deep is certainly inspiring. The Ten Thousand Buddha Monastery is a symbol of this Buddhist devotion. It is a tribute to the sculpture of Buddha; a tribute to the depth of love and devotion that a faithful Buddhist has for the figure of his master; Lord Buddha.
The Ten thousand Buddhist Monastery is located in the city of Sha Tin, Honk Kong. Despite its name, it is not an actual monastery as no monks stay resident here. It is purely run and managed by the devout Buddhist, the lay person, who has an ordinary life yet an undying love for his religion. The beginning of this temple is a story that mirrors the same idea. Yuet Kai, the father of the monastery was also a lay person who preached Buddhism in the local monastery. He had great visions for expanding Buddhism which was recognized by a rich estate owner who devoted his properties for Yuet Kai’s cause. By the time Yuet Kai decided on building a monastery, the preacher became old but persevered to make his dream a reality so much so that the building materials were carried to the site of construction by his very own hands. It took eight years to complete construction of the building and it took another 10 years to construct the other 12800 Buddha statues that are housed here. Today this spectacular site of talent and devotion attracts hundreds each year. A central highlight of the monastery is the preserved body of Yuet Kai who lies in the heart of the building within a glass case. His visions for this temple have certainly been fulfilled just like he wanted.
