One of the most popular and iconic landmarks of Malaysia are the Batu Caves. Considered to be among the most revered shrines in the Hindu culture, the Batu Caves are a cultural attraction which promises to be an unforgettable spiritual experience. The Batu Caves are also the site of the Thaipusam Hindu festival, which is one of Malaysia’s biggest Hindu festivals.
Located in Selangor, roughly 13km away from Kuala Lumpur, the Batu Caves is a shrine devoted to the Hindu deity Murugan. The shrine is considered to be one of the most famous Hindu shrines outside India. The caves themselves are considered to be over 400 million years old, and were transformed into a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai in the late 19th Century. The temple complex comprises three large caves which rise almost 100m above the surface level. Access to the shrine is through a steep staircase consisting of over 270 steps. Within the Temple Cave are some intricate Hindu shrines and monuments, some of which date back to the origins of the temple itself. The Ramayana Cave, another cave in this temple complex is known for its beautiful paintings depicting Hindu deities and folklore. The Art Gallery Cave and the Museum Cave are worth visiting, as they house many ornate shrines and artefacts. The main attraction of the Batu Caves is the Lord Murugan statue, a 47m tall golden statue which also happens to be the tallest statue of Lord Murugan.
