Set high in the misty mountains of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya has a cool climate which is quite a welcome relief from the heat, especially for locals living in other areas! Here are some things you should know about this charming city.
British colonial origins
Founded by Samuel Baker in the 19th century during British colonial rule, Nuwara Eliya became a popular hill country retreat. Due to its cold weather and the many English style cottages and bungalows, it soon earned the nickname of “Little England”.
Tea filled landscapes
It was also the centre of the burgeoning tea trade introduced by the British with the area playing host to tea estates that still dot the hills. In fact, staying at hotels in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka and taking a tour of such estates has become a popular activity for tourists.
Sights to see
Lake Gregory, a popular place for boat rides is a well-known local attraction as is Victoria Park. Within 5 minutes of Cottage 42, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the world’s most scenic courses that you can visit. Nature lovers should also head to the Horton Plains National Park home to the famed World’s End viewpoint.
Festival period
April is generally the busiest time in the city. Coinciding with the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year, Nuwara Eliya draws lots of visitors and hosts golf tournaments, horse races and a much-loved flower show.
