Dedduwa is a forgotten bit of natural beauty close to Bentota and is a collection of marshy lands and paddy fields winding its way through the wetlands of Dedduwa Lake. It is the site of a brand-new project that has been likened to Mexico’s Mayakoba. Here’s more information on it.
What’s the Plan?
The plan by the Southern Development minister is to cater to high-end tourism enriching the Bentota hotel industry.
What Kind of Tourism Zone?
The project is expected to span 1,800 acres and consist of restaurants, water sports facilities and other entertainment options. It will also ensure that the natural biodiversity of Dedduwa is protected through sustainable eco-tourism. It is an initiative that is followed by resorts in Bentota like AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa.
Impact on Communities
The project is expected to have a positive impact on the local community with job opportunities and land value in the Bentota area expected to rise thanks to the venture.
Is Anyone Negatively Impacted
Most of the islands on the lake were uninhabited and the very purpose of the project is to ensure that the ecosystem is protected. Most of the area under development are abandoned paddy field and marshland.
Where Things Stand
A financial feasibility report was completed in 2018 and it is currently being reviewed for possible construction to commence in the coming year.
