The “Minneriya Elephant Gathering” has become popular the world over for its incredible sight of the gentle giants. In the months of July and August, the dry zone in Sri Lanka is confronted with prolonged droughts tempting herds of elephants to move away in search of water and food. Most of these jumbos gather around Minneriya tank which never goes out of water even during the dry season!

This will be one of the most eye-catching natural scenes you’ll ever see! About 300 – 400 elephants can be viewed on the tank bed on any given evening and it’s amazing to enjoy how they drink water, eat and play around the tank. If you are luckier, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of one or two tuskers. There will be no better place to witness the largest elephants in South Asia and their annual event!
